More than a third of five-year-olds not ready for school

29 Nov 2012

A third of five-year-olds who enter the school system lack the basic skills needed to prepare them for full-time education, impinging on their ability to learn well, a recent report by Ofsted has found.

The annual report revealed that in terms of vocabulary use, children from the poorest homes are on average more than a year behind their more affluent classmates.

It added that:

Too many children are still entering school without the basic skills and abilities they need to be ready to learn well.

It is a concern that 34 per cent of children are not working securely in communication, language and literacy by the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
