Free film resource to highlight the joy of reading
7 Sep 2012
In support of Unesco’s International Literacy Day on 8 September, the education charity FILMCLUB (www.filmclub.org) is offering a free, downloadable resource for schools featuring five great films which highlight the power of literature and the joy of reading.
Selected by the charity’s expert programmers, the titles range from The Neverending Story, in which children harness the transformative power of the imagination through books, and The Princess Bride, which sees a child’s reluctance turned around by the enchanting power of literature, to The Diary Of Anne Frank, which conveys the value of reading and writing for solace, escape and historical record. Each film has an associated synopses, reviews and discussion points to help spark discussion and debate, and encourage young people to develop their own literacy by writing reviews afterwards.
FILMCLUB works with 7000 UK schools including many in disadvantaged areas. It is committed to increasing opportunities for the poorest children in society. 93% of teachers involved with the scheme say it makes culture available to children who wouldn’t otherwise experience it and nearly 60% say it helps close the gap between the highest and lowest achievers.
The ‘FILMCLUB Guide to International Literacy Day’ is one in a new series of educational resources produced by the charity to facilitate the use of film to reinforce the curriculum and raise awareness of topical issues. The guide is available to download free from the website at www.filmclub.org and members of FILMCLUB can order these and thousands of other great films free of charge.
