Students struggling with English and Maths will be taught up to 18

Education Secretary Michael Gove has announced from 2013 pupils that fail to get at least a ‘C’ grade in their English and Maths GCSEs may be required to continue studying until they are 18. Those with 'D' grades will just be expected to re-take their GCSE exams, while for those who get less than a 'D' there will be more teaching and other tests.

The announcement follows a recent CBI poll that says that two out of every five employers are concerned that school leavers do not have the literacy and numeracy skills required for work.
