Rochdale’s Community Champions initiative wins national award

23 Mar 2012

Rochdale's ground-breaking initiative helps residents who are facing significant challenges such as poor literacy to change their lives for the better. 185 Community Champions have helped bring about more than 2,000 positive outcomes in the area including people moving from long-term sick into employment, others entering education, some learning to read and others simply being able to manage their family circumstances better and avoid family breakdowns.

The initiative was the inspiration behind our Literacy Champions programme which is currently working in 10 London boroughs with families with young children.

On winning the Local Government Chronicle’s 2012 Community Involvement Award Chief Executive, Roger Ellis, said:

“This programme is all about people supporting neighbours and members of their wider community who are most in need. It shows just what can be done if we work together and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved.”

Helen Chicot, who leads the initiative in Rochdale, is a National Literacy Trust consultant for local areas looking to address poor literacy. Find out more about our support for local areas.  Read more about the original initiative.
