Pupil premium rises by £58 per child

13 Oct 2011

Following a drop in children registered for free school meals, the government have announced that the pupil premium is to be boosted by £58 per child, bringing the total pupil premium per child to £488 for 2011/12.

Children’s minister Sarah Teather commented that,

We know that just 27 per cent of pupils on free school meals get five good GCSE grades compared with 54 per cent of non-free school meal pupils. This extra funding will help tackle this inequality and enable schools to provide the extra support they need to reach their full potential.

Last month’s Liberal Democrat Party conference saw the announcement by Teather that funding for the pupil premium will double next year to £1.25bn, and continue to rise until 2014/5, when it will be worth £2.5bn.
