The new parent-facing website from the National Literacy Trust

To mark the “National Year of Communication”, the National Literacy Trust is launching a new website for parents and carers which emphasises the positive role they can play in helping their baby develop communication skills. It should be a useful site to point any parents that you are working with towards.
www.talktoyourbaby.org.uk will now be a gateway to both the existing Talk To Your Baby site for professionals, and for the new, parent-facing website. The new parent-facing website will provide information on the importance of communicating with children from birth, and useful tips on incorporating talk time into everyday life. There are also fun activities to do, such as listening to podcasts and colouring in pictures.
To get parents thinking about how they can make small changes to their daily routine which will have big benefits for their children, there are 150 free books on offer to parents who make a pledge to spend more time communicating with their children.
We also have 300 Driving My Tractor book and CD sets to give away to parents who hold a “Talk To Your Baby party”. The idea is to encourage get-togethers with friends and their young children, in order to spend fun time singing, reciting nursery rhymes, making shakers and talking together. There is a party plan on the website with song sheets, picture cards and instructions.

Talk To Your Baby is still very much creating resources for professionals, which are all accessible as usual on this website. We are currently working on the creation of a Community of Research and Practice. This will be free to join and offer members the ability to post questions and discuss issues around practice and research. The community will allow for networking, flagging of good practice and innovation, resource discussion and conversation about current issues within the sector. More information about the community of practice will be coming soon.
