Plans to “rejuvenate” health visiting service
24 Feb 2011
The Health Visitor Implementation Plan, published on 8 February, proposes to increase and rejuvenate the health visiting service, with an extra 4,200 health visitors to support families with young children.
The plan reinforces the value of children’s centres and pledges that each centre should have access to a health visitor, whose role will include working with other local services to support disadvantaged families and deal with more complex issues over the long term.
Public Health Minister Ann Milton said:
As well as new recruits, we also want to encourage those who have left the profession to return. And we will offer existing health visitors the chance to refresh and develop their skills — helping to improve career opportunities and retention.
