Schools Minister to lead debate at National Literacy Trust public fringe event in Birmingham
5 Oct 2010
The National Literacy Trust in association with Starbucks will be hosting a lively panel debate event on Tuesday 5 October over coffee and pastries at the Conservative Conference.
The “Rising to the Literacy Challenge: Building a bright future for Britain” event will give key players in the current education system the opportunity to set out their vision for the future of literacy. Their ideas will be scrutinised by an audience of educationalists, political minds and members of the public.
George Dugdale, Policy Adviser at the National Literacy Trust says, "The new school year has begun and education in England is facing its biggest changes for a decade. Our event will give those leading the changes, including the Minister for Schools and the founder of a West London free school, an opportunity to explain their vision for the future of literacy in the UK."
The Conservative debate panel includes:
Jonathan Douglas, Director, National Literacy Trust (Chair)
Nick Gibb, Minister for Schools
Toby Young, Journalist and founder of The West London Free School
Gavin Barwell, MP for Croydon Central
Miriam Gross, Literary editor and author of “So Why Can’t They Read?”
Starbucks has kindly agreed to host the event at a store near the conference as a sign of its commitment to improving literacy.
The event will be held at Starbucks Coffee House 114-115 New Street, Birmingham B2 4JH. If you are interested in attending the free event please email farah.pasha@literacytrust.org.uk or call 020 7820 6253 to reserve your place.
