Liz Attenborough to leave the National Literacy Trust

3 Aug 2010

The National Literacy Trust announces that Liz Attenborough will be leaving her role as Manager of Talk To Your Baby at the end of October, following this year’s Talk To Your Baby conference.

Liz says:

“It has been a privilege to work in the early years sector and extraordinarily interesting to have been engaged in raising the profile of this important subject.  Now it is time to hand over to someone else to take the campaign in new directions.  The forthcoming National Year, coupled with the soon-to-be-published results of our Face to Face research around messages to new parents, will provide an excellent platform to build on what has been achieved so far.”

Talk To Your Baby, the early language campaign of the National Literacy Trust, was created in January 2003 to encourage parents and carers to talk more to babies and young children, from birth to three.  The campaign has built a website of international standing, with 35 much-praised downloadable resources (some bilingual) that are widely used by practitioners in their work with new parents.  Research into the ways that buggies face, published in November 2008, gained media attention around the world and has changed attitudes to what is needed in infant transportation.   In addition, Talk To Your Baby has held a number of successful conferences showcasing good practice and new research, and published a strategic guidance paper on early communication.

Jonathan Douglas, Director of the National Literacy Trust, says:

“Talk To Your Baby is addressing one of the most significant challenges that society faces – the promotion of early communication, which is the foundation of social skills and of all literacy. Liz’s vision and leadership has meant that the campaign has worked with professionals across the country to successfully take this message to families.”

In the next month the National Literacy Trust will start the work of recruiting a new manager for Talk To Your Baby.
