Michael Gove writes to Ed Balls setting out the DfE spending cuts for this year

8 Jun 2010

As part of the coalition government’s deficit reduction plans, each department has set out their contribution to the £6.2 billion worth of cuts that need to be found this year.

The Department for Education released a letter from Secretary of State Michael Gove to his predecessor Ed Balls setting out the DfE’s £670m contribution.

The letter announces that schools, children’s centres and 16 to 19 provision will be protected for this year. Schools will also receive all their allotted educational maintenance allowance funding along with existing money for one-to-one tuition.

The DfE’s contribution will be made up from a £311 million cut in local authority funding along with £359 million worth of efficiency savings.

Along with the details of savings for this calendar year the Chancellor, George Osborne, today released a consultation document inviting the public, think-tanks, unions and professional bodies to have their say on how government spending should work in future years.
