CILIP Manifesto released for 2010

18 Mar 2010

The Chartered Institute of Libraries and Information Providers (CILIP) has released their manifesto for 2010 suggesting key priorities for the new government to consider. The manifesto advises that the following six steps are taken to improve and maintain library and information services:

  • Make school libraries statutory
  • Promote and protect the rights of users within copyright law
  • Build a successful knowledge economy
  • Preserve the UK's digital cultural heritage
  • Fund and enable the effective co-ordination of health information
  • Develop a set of library entitlements for public library users

As well as the six key issues outlined above, the manifesto also highlights the role that libraries and information providers can play in society, rebuilding the economy by helping people to learn new skills and promoting community development by providing community spaces and supporting active citizenship. With this in mind the manifesto claims that libraries and information providers are fundamental to the success of our society and should be prioritised by the new government.

Biddy Fisher, CILIP President, said:

“Quality library and information services make unique contributions to the success of our society; they underpin education, social mobility, and community development; they provide the information that assists the rebuilding of the economy, informs research and puts content into technology; they contain and preserve cultural identities. The next government must take action and adopt CILIP’s six priorities within policies designed to meet the challenges of the future.”
