Latest GCSE attainment figures released

17 Dec 2009

The statistics show that 26.9% of students eligible for FSM achieved five A* to C GCSE grades including maths and English, compared to 54.4% of those not eligible. Therefore the gap of 27.5% has decreased slightly from 27.8% last year and 28.1% in 2006.

Other figures show that girls are still outperforming boys with 54.5% achieving five or more A* to C grades including maths and English compared to 47.3% of boys. This gap has narrowed by 1% over the past year.

Schools Minister Vernon Coaker said:

While today's figures show that the attainment gap between boys and girls and FSM pupils and their peers continues to close, we are not complacent and are determined that every single pupil gets the support they need.

We’ve set out clear measures to further improve the quality of the teaching and the support to schools with the widest gaps – continuing to expand the academy and trust school programmes; continued support for low-performing schools through the National Challenge; and legislating to give every pupil and parent clear guarantees of their rights, including intensive support and one to one tuition.
