Some primary pupils leave school having only read three books

The research also found that some youngsters are growing up not knowing the endings of some stories in children's literature. Classics such as Treasure Island, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Roald Dahl's Matilda are among books sometimes left unfinished in class.
The research, which involved a survey of 500 teachers, also found that a quarter of primary school pupils read just one whole book in class a year or none at all.
