World Book Day gets into gear
19 Feb 2010
In the build up to World Book Day (4 March) a variety of exciting events are taking place across the UK, and plans for the big day are being announced.
Children’s author John Fardell will talk to readers about his books on 27 February in East Lothian, Scotland. On 2 March, Shona MacLean will read from and sign copies of Game of Sorrows in Waterstone’s Aberdeen.
On the day itself, Sharon Osbourne will sign copies of her début novel, Revenge, at Selfridges in London. At Westminister Library, John Bird, founder of the Big Issue, will talk to people participating in the "6 Book Challenge", which invites less confident readers to read six books.
Victoria Barnsley, Chair of World Book Day and HarperCollins C.E.O., said:
"With just two weeks to go, everything is gearing up for a fantastic World Book Day this year."
"Over 300,000 children have already registered to hear the World Book Day £1 book authors read their stories via the Read to a Million Kids website. And this year there are even more events and activities in schools, libraries, bookshops and clubs around the country as the World Book Day phenomenon continues to grow."
The festivities also include the publication of six specially written World Book Day books with two stories in each £1 book. Authors include Darcey Bussell, Philip Ardagh and Chris Higgins. More than 13 million £1 World Book Day Book Tokens will be distributed to school children across the country.
