Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall honours services to literacy with reception at Clarence House

1 Feb 2011

To celebrate National Storytelling Week (29 January to 5 February) Patron of the National Literacy Trust HRH The Duchess of Cornwall will hold a lunchtime reception on Thursday (3 February) to honour those who have made a valuable contribution to literacy in the UK.

The Duchess will welcome figures from the literary world and charities and organisations supporting the literacy of children and adults across the UK. Attendees include playwrights Alan Bennett and Tom Stoppard, bestselling author Joanna Trollope, Children’s Laureate Anthony Browne and Young Bond author Charlie Higson.

Director of the National Literacy Trust, Jonathan Douglas, says:

It’s a common misconception that poor literacy is a problem suffered only by developing countries. One in six people in the UK struggle to read and write. Poor literacy compromises health, happiness and employability.

We are delighted that The Duchess of Cornwall is recognising the crucial importance of literacy and the valuable contribution made by literary figures and those working in the literacy sector."

Bestselling author of contemporary novels and historical fiction, Joanna Trollope, says:

Not being able to read or write easily are two of the most keenly felt remaining social taboos. I am committed to championing literacy in the UK because reading and writing are crucial for having both a fulfilling life and proper self esteem. I'm delighted to support the National Literacy Trust, and warmly endorse their belief that with literacy, anyone can succeed in life.”

Amanda Ross, National Literacy Trust Ambassador and creator and producer of the TV Book Club, says:

I am a passionate believer in the power of literacy. My work with the TV Book Club has enabled me to see firsthand the difference that reading can make to people’s lives. I hope to continue to inspire others by championing excellent books and emerging authors in the future.“
