Build-A-Bear Workshop® proudly supports the National Literacy Trust

9 Sep 2010

Build-A-Bear Workshop®, the interactive entertainment retailer of customised stuffed animals, is supporting the National Literacy Trust, a UK charity that transforms lives through literacy. From the 1st October 2010 to 31st December 2011, Guests visiting any one of the 54 Build-A-Bear Workshop stores in the UK can support this worthy cause by purchasing a Turner Owl™ plush owl, for £15, which generates a donation of £1 to the charity.

Turner Owl is a snowy white owl with speckled fur and a head that spins all the way around, making him a hooting gift for the child in your life! The proceeds go towards supporting the literacy development of children across the UK and campaigning to raise public awareness of the importance and impact of literacy.

As part of the Build-A-Bear Workshop bear-making experience, each Guest selects a small satin heart, adds their own love and wishes, and carefully places it inside their furry friend.  The satin heart is a Build-A-Bear Workshop trademark and brings the furry friendship to life. All monies raised via purple satin hearts from 1st July to 30th September 2010 will go directly to the National Literacy Trust.

Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from the purchase of each Bearville Outfitters® Virtual Stuff Game Card until 31st December 2010, can also be directed by Guests to the National Literacy Trust. Guests can activate the cards and direct funding at buildabearville.com®, the company’s virtual world.

“One in six children in the UK will grow up without the literacy skills they need to succeed in life. At the National Literacy Trust we are campaigning to ensure everyone, especially children, benefits from the rewards that literacy brings,” explains Judith Parke, Head of Development at the National Literacy Trust. “Through our partnership with Build-A-Bear Workshop, we can raise awareness of the importance of literacy and set more children on a path that leads to a fulfilled and successful life.”

Build-A-Bear Workshop believes in the teddy bear philosophy of being good people and good bears. Throughout its 13-year history, the company has shared the hug of a teddy bear wherever needed in local communities and abroad. Build-A-Bear Workshop has given Guests a voice in supporting the causes that are important to them and through its corporate donations and foundation grant programmes.

“Build-A-Bear Workshop continuously strives to provide Guests with opportunities to assist causes that are important to them,” said Maxine Clark, founder and chief executive bear of Build-A-Bear Workshop. “The National Literacy Trust's research aims to improve literacy attitudes, habits and skills in the UK, so we are honoured to partner with such a worthy charity that helps raise the importance of literacy.”
