Help inspire reluctant readers by recommending books online
29 May 2007
Lovereading4schools and the National Literacy Trust are working together to develop book lists for reluctant readers. Add your vote online anytime from 1 June to 31 July 2007 at www.lovereading4schools.co.uk
Parents, teachers and anyone involved with supporting reluctant readers can suggest books that have been particularly well-received by children on the Lovereading4schools website. Each recommended book will be categorised by relevant age and gender.
Schools, publishers and parents can all have their say. Once contributions have been received, Julia Eccleshare, director of the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) and board member of the National Literacy Trust, will supervise the creation of the final ‘Master List’.
All of these books will be available on Lovereading4schools, at a 25% discount. Parents and teachers will be able to download free Opening Extracts. This ‘try before you buy’ benefit is unique to Lovereading4schools and its sister sites Lovereading.co.uk and Lovereading4kids.co.uk
Peter Crawshaw, Director and Co-founder of Lovereading said:
We know via feedback from schools and parents that Lovereading4school’s original book lists have been useful and valuable. Our aim is to transform reluctant readers into voracious readers! Lovereading4schools is a fantastic opportunity for teachers, parents and children to come together, share, and experience the simple pleasures of the written word with these unique web tools."
Julia Strong, deputy director of the National Literacy Trust said:
A love of reading supports literacy skills and lays the foundation for a life-long engagement with learning. But you have to find the right books, and if a child struggles with reading that can be hard. The reluctant readers list is a great way to address this issue as it allows people to share their experience of what works to inspire young people who don’t feel reading is for them. Imagine what a difference it would make if every child loved to read - this is a fantastic opportunity for parents and teachers to help find titles to inspire children to love reading."
