Academies participating in Literacy for Life share their experiences of the programme, best practices, and tips on implementing across-curriculum literacy strategies     

Ormiston Forge Academy  

Reading Aloud

 In this project teachers regularly read aloud to secondary school students. This approach models expert reading, encourages reading for pleasure and develops  imagination, inference and auditory skills.   

The Literacy Coordinator at Ormiston Forge Academy shares her experience of the Reading Aloud project.

"We started Reading Aloud earlier this year and it has been incredibly well received. Students have commented on how the scheme has introduced them to new books that they wouldn’t have considered choosing before and how useful it is to discuss the title they are all reading together."

Reading is not just decoding, to understand a text people must use their inference skills.

The Literacy Coordinator at Ormiston Forge Academy explains the impact the Literacy for Life inference training has had on students.

Brighton Aldridge Academy 


MACK (Motivation, Aspiration, Confidence and Knowledge) is a 10 week programme which aims to help students overcome emotional and behavioral difficulties, that act as barriers which prevent them accessing the curriculum.

Mack was introduced to Brighton Aldridge Academy.

“MACK has helped me overcome shyness and feel more confident. It is a great programme for students to help them get through life. I don’t know how it could be any better.”

Ormiston Horizon Academy

Pupils as Writers

Pupils as Writers aims to support the development of writing as a pleasurable activity, helping pupils to build up stamina and fluency. At Ormiston Horizon, pupils have been given the opportunity to write independently for 10 minutes a week as part of their English lessons.

“I used the free writing books to write little stories… I know some of my friends would write song lyrics in them. I loved writing in the free writing books because I was able to express myself through writing in them… I was gutted that we would only have ten minutes at a time writing in them, as I could have continued on forever!”

Voices Festival

The Voices the festival gave students the opportunity to be creative with language and express themselves. Professional authors, poets and dramatists guided small groups through workshops to produce individual and collective work.

Georgia Hindle, Literacy Lead at DACA said:

“The festival was a huge success- I saw students really grow in confidence throughout the course of the day and engage with the writers and their own writing. I was so proud at the end when they read out their own pieces of writing. In particular, the Globe Theatre workshop really helped pupils to go beyond their boundaries.”
