I want to volunteer as a Literacy Champion or Ambassador

Thank you for your interest in volunteering as a Literacy Champion or Ambassador.

We are only able to offer volunteering opportunities in areas where we are currently funded to run the programme. Please see our delivery page for the latest information.

As well as living in one of these areas, potential volunteers need to fit the following criteria:

Literacy Champions

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have experience with young children (either through work or your family)
  • Be a confident reader and writer
  • Be able to commit to at least two hours a week (including preparation time) for six months, usually during normal office hours
  • Be happy to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (CRB) check if requried

Literacy Ambassadors

  • Know of or attend family literacy activities that take place during the day in your community
  • Know families who would benefit from literacy support but do not already access these community services
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Have good verbal communication skills
  • Be happy to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (CRB) check if required

If you think volunteering as a Literacy Champion or Ambassador is right for you, please contact jennifer.cole@literacytrust.org.uk. We will need to pass your details on to the teams running the projects locally, so please bear with us if it takes a while to receive a reply. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that volunteer places will be available, but we’ll do our best!

If becoming a Literacy Champion or Ambassador isn’t up your street, you can still support the National Literacy Trust by fundraising for us.

Alternatively, for more ideas about volunteering to support literacy, see our FAQs page.
