Amity Reading Clubs
is a voluntary organisation which provides one-to-one literacy tuition for adults with special learning difficulties, through three clubs operating in south east London. Volunteers are recuited and trained to support work with students. The site provides information about the organisation's work, as well as access to training materials.

Better Reading Partnership
The Better Reading Partnership approach, originating in Education Bradford, provides pupils with additional one-to-one reading support from trained support staff and community volunteers. There are three models of delivery, depending on partners time commitment: 15-minute sessions three times a week over 10 weeks; 20 minutes twice a week for 12 weeks; or once a week for 15 weeks. Accreditation is through NWYOCN. The approach has been adopted by over 35 LEAs. Training is offered by Bradford to LEA staff in other areas to enable them to train their own reading volunteers or non-teaching school staff to support pupils. More

Learning Partnerships
is a registered charity that recruits, trains, places and supports volunteers working with children (aged 7-12) in inner city Leeds. Volunteers come from the local community and local businesses and are offered the opportunity to support children with individual reading sessions in schools or in small groups at after-school and community literacy clubs. An Open College accreditation award is available for those volunteering for a term or more.

Online Reading Partners is a Coventry based scheme which pairs school children with reading partners who read the same books as they do. The project trains and CRB checks reading partners, who then work through the books, asking questions based on what the child's teacher has said they need to work on.

The Pooh Bear Reading Assistance Society works in Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire, recruiting and training volunteers to support children aged 4 to 16 with their reading. The support is provided in schools, family homes and reading clubs. Volunteers are offered basic and accredited training and continuing support.

Reading Matters recruits, trains and supports adult volunteers to work one-to-one with pupils that have reading difficulties in key stages 3 and 4 (age 11 to 16). Volunteers are recruited from the local community and training leads to an Open College Network qualification. Partnerships are established with local libraries to ensure resources are available for volunteers. Struggling KS4 students can also be trained as reading partners.Schools make a contribution to costs; grants and donations cover the rest. Possible funding sources are Excellence in Cities, Education Action Zones or the Children's Fund, as well as family literacy budgets. Find out more.
Reading Matters currently works in primarily in Yorkshire (Bradford, Calderdale, Doncaster, Leeds, Sheffield and Wakefield) and Birmingham, although it hopes to expand into London and the South East.

Springboard for Children is a registered charity that uses specialist teachers and trained volunteers to work one-to-one with primary school children to support their literacy development. Children are identified by the school's special educational needs coordinator and receive twice-weekly sessions of 30-50 minutes with the same tutor. Our aim is to break cycles of failure, frustration and disruptive behaviour through the individual, nurturing attention provided by literacy tutors. Springboard for Children currently works in primary schools in south London, north London and Manchester. We need committed volunteers to join us so that together we can help more children.

There are around 500 volunteer bureaux throughout the UK, putting people in touch with organisations that need volunteers of all kinds. They are sometimes known by other names such as volunteer centres, volunteer development agencies or volunteer action. You should be able to find the details of your nearest bureau in your local telephone book. Volunteer Reading Help
(VRH) was set up in 1973 to help primary school children with their reading. It is a charity operating in England through a network of local branches which link people from the local community with children aged six to 11 who teachers feel would benefit from regular one-to-one help. If there is not a VRH branch in your area, you may be able to train via distance learning and offer support to a local school as an independent volunteer.
