A website focused on encouraging libraries and arts organisations to work more closely in partnership, for example, on audience development, marketing, provision of venues and information support. It is based on the work of the Books Connect project in the East Midlands which seeks to exploit the growing experience of libraries in literature promotion and reader development by using it as a springboard to develop partnerships between libraries and other art forms.

Run by Earl, the consortium for public library networking, Ask a Librarian is an interactive electronic reference library promising a reply to any factual question within two working days. A most useful site.

Association of Senior Children's and Education Librarians (ASCEL)
National membership network of children's and education librarians. A national committee and 12 regional committees work with a range of national and local organisations to promote the value of library services for children. Members have access to training, an annual conference, regular newsletters, and a members' website - www.ascel.org.uk. ASCEL also acts as a national point of contact for School Library Services where they operate within individual local authorities.

The Early Years Library Network is funded by a partnership between the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. It aims to create new partnerships between libraries and other sectors, enrich the quality of libraries' early years work, and provide a national framework to share good practice.

The Internet Public Library is an imaginative project that aims to provide library services to the Internet community, to learn and teach what librarians have to contribute in a digital environment, to promote librarianship and the importance of libraries, and to share interesting ideas and techniques with other librarians. The site is US based but does have links to 'mirror' sites for South America (based in Argentina) and Europe (based in Sweden).

Museums, Libraries and Archives
Council (MLA) is the national development agency working for and on behalf of museums, libraries and archives, advising Government on policy and priorities for the sector. It was formerly known as Resource. MLA's roles are to provide strategic leadership, to act as a powerful advocate, to develop capacity and to promote innovation and change.

The Network: tackling social exclusion in libraries, museums, archives and galleries
was set up to act as an information exchange on issues of social inclusion in these sectors.  It produces a regular newsletter to share information and runs training events. A website provides information about courses and conferences, and an archive of The Network Newsletter, as well as information about publications, a range of downloadable documents, and links to other relevant sites.

Reader2reader is the readers' section of the People's Network, where readers can share opinions about books they've loved and hated. It has been developed by Opening the Book, for the Museums, Library and Archives Council, as part of the People's Network of online services delivered by England's public libraries.

The Reading Agency
is an independent charity that works with public libraries to encourage people to read more. It runs the Summer Reading Challenge, as well as other reading promotions for children and adults. It also works with prisons, publishers, unions, businesses and broadcasters, and runs The Vital Link project, in partnership with the National Literacy Trust.

Social inclusion and libraries: a resource guide
- Webpages produced in 2001 by the Community Services Group of The Library Association (now known as CILIP), in association with the Community Development Foundation. The pages provide background to the development of social exclusion policy and practice, particularly in relation to the library sector, with details of reports, resources, latest news and useful links.

The School Library Association is an organisation for everyone who is interested in the development of school libraries - primary and secondary. It publishes guidance documents, promotes good practice, and operates a register of recommended consultants and trainers to support school library promotion and development.

School Library Services
School Library Services operate in some local authority areas to provide support to subscribing schools. If there is not one for your school's education authority, it is possible to buy into services from other authorities where they do exist. If you do not know where these are, ASCEL operates as a national point of contact.
