Leadership of language and literacy is one of the most important roles in a school.

In association with Exeter University and developed from our Literacy for Life programme we are now offering secondary teachers the chance to become accredited literacy leaders.

When students reach secondary school they are faced with more subject-specific vocabularies that can create a barrier to achievement. Through embedding great literacy teaching students can access the curriculum more successfully.

Not only will this course equip you with the skills to drive excellence in literacy across your school, but you will be awarded completion of the University of Exeter's Independent Study Module, which holds 30 points at master's level

Combining your studies with your day to day practice you will present a portfolio demonstrating:

  • knowledge of the role of language and literacy in teaching and learning
  • motivating and inspirational leadership of language and literacy throughout the curriculum
  • effective establishment of systems and processes to embed language and literacy across the curriculum
  • effective monitoring and evaluation of language and literacy across the curriculum

Who should apply?

Any English teacher or literacy leader keen to develop their leadership skills or work towards an MA in Education in Language and Literacy.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the course is £1500. This includes guidance, contact time with a tutor, moderation of your portfolio and a certificate of completion. It also includes one year's membership of the National Literacy Trust Network, giving you access to a huge range of resources to support your literacy provision. Existing Network members receive a £100 discount per school.

When does it run?

As a distance learning programme the course can run ad-hoc, so you can fit it around your existing work.
