Statement

I have worked in several secondary schools in the North of England as an English teacher, Head of English and now Assistant head with responsibility for English. I believe that no one school or person has all the answers to Literacy development or policy implementation. The only way a school can increase its literacy standards for all learners is by personalising a strategy for the child and the school within its own contexts. The solution to the issues needs to be discussed and debated, begging, borrowing and stealing ideas from everywhere, but ultimately creating a personalised response that everyone is able to follow and implement. If the teachers and support staff are clear about your policy then everyone will be able to encourage learners to improve all aspects of their literacy. I am currently setting up a Literacy Network group involving members of schools, across phases, to meet, discus issues and find solutions.
