Statement

The city wide literacy strategy (ESCAL) was officially launched on 1 December 2009. Its expected outcomes are to increase: • levels of literacy of Sheffield children. • the emphasis on enjoyment and confidence in learning. • family and social cohesion. The achievements in the first year have been to: • Establishing a city wide focus and a collective sense of responsibility for increasing children’s attainment and engagement in literacy. • Maximising the contribution of a wide range of partners. • Creating a coherent Sheffield approach to the development of communication, language and literacy from birth to 11, with a current focus on speech and language. • Contributing to increased attainment at the ages of 5 and 11. • Stimulating an innovative and celebratory approach to literacy in and beyond schools and settings. • Increasing the focus on literacy in the home. • Facilitating cross-school/setting networking and the sharing of good practice. • Achievin
