RaW Football Stories
Reading The Game has developed a programme in partnership with the the BBC adult literacy campaign, RaW (Read and Write) called RaW Football Stories. The aim of RaW is to engage adults and encourage them to make the most of their reading and writing skills.

As part of BBC RaW, Reading The Game worked on a pilot project with Brentford FC, where Bees fans collected their stories about the club. An adult tutor and publisher were on hand to help them to write them up, and a book, Brentford 'til I die, was launched at the Club on 10th December 2005. Since this project, The Griffin Park Learning Zone has seen its 'Computing for the terrified' courses grow significantly in popularity.

Building on the success of this pilot, 'RaW Football Stories' has been developed which will see 20 Clubs running a similar programme, bringing benefits to hundreds of families between May 2006 and May 2007. If you are a football club interested in running RaW Football Stories please email Craig Bradley who is coordinating the programme bradley64@ntlworld.com. You can also download an overview of the programme. You will need Acrobat Reader to view this document.

Case study
Read about the fantastic series of RaW Football Stories events that Everton FC delivered in October 2006.

Some libraries across the country who have signed up as RaW centres (where you can access BBC RaW ideas, resources and activities) are running World Cup related activities. Find out if your library is one of these.

During the summer of 2006, BBC Radio 5Live collected football stories. These are expected to be published in 2007. For more details keep listening to 5Live, or keep an eye on the RTG website.

This year's World Book Day on 2 March marked the launch of Quick Reads, a major new initiative from leading publishers, booksellers and writers. Twelve of the biggest names in fiction and non-fiction published short, fast-paced new books designed to encourage adult reluctant readers to get hooked on books. Included in the series is The Team, written by football writer and Reading Champion Mick Dennis. The book details the fascinating lives of 11 people involved in all aspects of football. Find out more about the other titles in this series and see what resources have been created to support them.

A further 12 titles were release on 18 May, including I Love Football by Hunter Davies.
