The Family Reading Campaign, coordinated by the National Literacy Trust, is to develop of family reading cluster of around five schools in Lambeth. The scheme will involve local libraries, housing, health and the ethnic minorities team among its partners. The NLT’s evidence stresses the need for training in communication issues for all staff working with small children to build whole-school communities that read. Of all school subjects, reading has been found to be most sensitive to parental influence.

Campaign preparations
Across the summer, plans are being developed to link the
campaign with Children's Centres and to build better links
with the health service. Reading
Connects is working on a family involvement toolkit to
help schools support parents in encouraging reading in the
home. This will be available from November from the family
engagement section of the Reading Connects website. In addition,
Reading Champions
is working on a School Reading Champions Toolkit which will
include a section on involving dads.
