Case study: Lambeth libraries, London Picture: children and adults having fun in the library

Lambeth Libraries has activities and events throughout the year to encourage family reading. An example of this is the recent development of a partnership with a local group of children's writers and illustrators, CWISL (Children's Writers and Illustrators in South London), who wish to work with the library in promoting books to children and parents. CWISL and the library held a Christmas party in Brixton Library. CWISL members put on a display of their books and provided entertainment with a magic show and Spanish dancing.

CWISL members are all published authors and illustrators, work in the publishing industry or have books in the pipeline. They were able to persuade publishers to donate free giveaways to the families and also to get local businesses to provide refreshments.

The idea of the evening was to encourage parents to buy books as Christmas presents in a relaxed, fun and friendly atmosphere.

The library hosted the event and promoted it as a Love Libraries event, using the national Love Libraries marketing materials developed by MLA (The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council). We hope to work together on many other projects over the coming year to support and encourage family reading.
