Case study: Ferham Primary School, Rotherham

During the summer of 2006, Ferham Primary School hosted a Goldilocks and the Three Bears themed teddy bears' picnic.

This was a school library event funded by the Big Lottery (as part of Every Child Matters) and supported by Sure Start, Bookstart and Family Programmes.

Around 25 families whose children attend Ferham Primary School took part; the day consisted of story-telling, games, and activities with prizes and goodie bags, including two story books for each family. The emphasis was on learning in a fun, safe environment with both children and parents/carers enjoying books, stories and creative activities centred on the traditional story Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

School staff, librarian Lorraine Kiryluk & learning mentor Barbara Hector extended thanks to all who attended and gratefully acknowledged the help of staff from Sure Start, Bookstart and Family Programmes, who made sure the day was a great success. Another event was planned for spring 2007, with the same partners.

In 2005 the school secured Big Lottery funding to provide a library facility, and since then has built up a sound base of young readers who, along with their parents/carers, daily access the out of hours service. The message that reading is for life has encouraged many parents to reawaken their love of books; sharing a good story before bedtime also helps bonding and establishes a routine with their child.

Along with other initiatives, the promotion of reading for pleasure has boosted literacy levels of many pupils. The school was recently inspected by Ofsted and achieved a good rating, with special mention of the before and after-school-hours provision.
