Case study: Henry Fawcett Primary School, Lambeth

Henry Fawcett Primary School is currently placing a great emphasis on developing reading throughout the school.

Some of the initiatives include becoming a Reading Connects school and implementing the CLPE [Centre for Literacy in Primary Education] Power of Reading Project. This entails using a range of approaches and texts across the school so that children's ability to infer and deduct is increased and they develop a positive attitude towards books and reading. The school also has two Reading Recovery teachers working with targeted children in the two Year 1 classes.

As part of Family Reading Fortnight, the school is holding a Foundation Stage assembly after which parents can stay for a Reading Workshop to discover ways to help with their child's reading at home. Each child will be given either a 'Treasure Chest' of books (Nursery) or a donated book from Walker Publishers (Reception).

During National Storytelling Week (the first week of February), two storytellers will be coming in to work with the lower school, and a children's author to work with key stage 2 classes. On the Friday a Year 3 class will present a retelling of a Chinese Legend to perform in front of a whole school assembly.

The school's family learning focus for 2006-7 is on reading, as part of its remit to develop a wider community of readers who can support children's reading. It has been using the BBC RaW learning materials in conjunction with the Quick Reads and the Eastenders/BBC Comedy DVDs. Each successful adult student will receive an Open College Network London Region qualification after completing the course in early March. Students are in the process of learning strategies and fun activities to help their child's reading at home and develop their own reading skills.
