A secondary school conference looking at the power and importance of speaking and listening and articulacy in the whole school and across the curriculum. Providing a timely response to the new Ofsted framework this conference will draw on a number of experts from education and business to provide a rationale and practical strategies for whole school application in developing and embedding speech and language across the curriculum.
Speakers and sessions:
Lemn Sissay, poet and playwright, will perform a tapestry of his work, providing a platform for schools to discuss how they could do things differently.
Caroline Waters, HR Director BT, will present the business perspective, and why employers want schools to improve young people’s communication skills.
Phil Jarrett, HMI and former National Adviser for English, Ofsted, will discuss the evidence from Ofsted inspections about speaking and listening in schools, the implications for schools of recent changes to whole-school inspections, and aspects of good practice in speaking and listening.
Neil Mercer, Professor of Education, University of Cambridge, will present "It’s only words": the importance of spoken language in school or children’s futures, Neil will use evidence from research in education, psychology and linguistics to argue for the importance of a focus on spoken language in the curriculum, and in classroom practice, for helping to ensure that most children have the best opportunity for learning and personal development.
Neil Wilson, Executive Head Teacher of the South Manchester International Learning Enterprise Foundation Trust, will talk through the SCL strategies developed through the Federation’s programme, “Talk of the Town” to provide an inspirational case study of how schools can change the life chances of their students.
Sally Melvin and Francine McMahon, National Literacy Trust secondary experts, will examine the different training models used in secondary schools to embed talk across the curriculum.
