Who should attend?
The conference is aimed at primary practitioners, literacy coordinators and senior leaders wishing to explore, refresh and revitalise the theory and practice of how to teach reading beyond decoding and the key importance of reading for meaning.
What will happen on the day?
The day will open with key-note sessions from author Mal Peet and Prue Goodwin, setting the context for a new approach to integrating enjoyment and the power of more creative approaches to reading for meaning.
The heart of the conference will be workshop-based and grounded in classroom practice and pedagogy with a choice of two workshops from the following menu:
Workshop 1:Creative guided reading at Key Stage 1
Led by Jude Stubbs, Stoke On Trent LA Early Years and Literacy consultant.
Workshop 2: Think2Read - The theory, practice and power of reciprocal reading
Led by Donna Thomson, founder of Think2Read and Bea Gill, Dartington Primary School Literacy Leader and fellow Think2Read action researcher.
Workshop 3. Re exploring KS2 guided reading and the importance of "real" books
Led by Prue Goodwin. Having spent many years working at the University of Reading, she is now freelance as a lecturer to education professionals and a consultant to children’s publishers.
Workshop 4. Reading for Pleasure: how to develop a whole school reading culture, practical ways for promoting reading for pleasure and its impact on attainment
Led by the National Literacy Trust Team of Sarah DeZoysa (Schools Manager) and Dr Christina Clark (Head of Research). This is a practical workshop looking at developing a whole school reading culture, parental engagement and the power of reading for pleasure and its impact on attainment.
Specially selected booksellers will be offering exclusive deals on high-quality children's literature at stands throughout the event that can be visited at the beginning and end of the day, as well as in the break and at lunch.
What will I learn?
The importance and power of reciprocal reading and how it can support pupils in developing reading comprehension, independent enquiry and transferable thinking skills.
To explore the purpose of guided reading both at Key stage 1 and 2 and how to develop creative, engaging guided reading sessions with an emphasis on real books to develop reading comprehension skills.
How to develop a whole school reading culture with a host of practical ideas to engage and motivate pupils to read for both pleasure and attainment.
