Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall is celebrating her 70th birthday in July.

The Duchess loves reading and sharing children’s books, and is the patron of several organisations which promote and support literacy, including the National Literacy Trust, Beanstalk, BookTrust, First Story, Roald Dahl and the Wicked Young Writer Awards.

To celebrate her work with children’s literacy, Her Royal Highness is being presented with a set of bookshelves as a birthday surprise in July. We would like these to be full of lovely children’s books, but we would like your help in which titles to select.

We are asking for children from schools all over the UK to recommend their favourite books to be included on the Duchess’s bookshelves.

How can your school get involved?

All you need to do is to ask each class in your school to choose their favourite children’s book that they would like to give as a present.

Share these in a book-themed assembly and send your recommendations to the National Literacy Trust.

The book recommendations that you submit will be considered for the final selection of books that will be given to The Duchess.

Supporting resources

The teachers' notes resource includes a classroom activity plan and pupil worksheets. We hope you will find the assembly and classroom PowerPoint presentations helpful too.
