BTEC certificates in peer mentoring.
UK Youth has developed peer education and mentoring qualifications
for young people, based around four units. The introductory
unit teaches the principles behind peer education, how attitudes
develop and how they can be changed. The three remaining
units are based around how the young person will plan, undertake
and review their peer education or mentoring activities. Each
unit has clearly stated learning objectives, such as learning
to deal with difficult group situations. The peer education
qualification takes nine to 12 months to complete; the mentoring
version takes 12 to 14 months. Both are recognised by UCAS.
Assessment is via a portfolio, which can include evidence
such as live observation, peer assessment or spoken evidence
on tape. More

Certificate in Community Volunteering. ASDAN has developed
a qualification at Levels 1 and 2 to recognise the general,
transferable skills and good practice that volunteers need
to work effectively, whatever the context. It is suitable
for both young people (age 14 and over) and adults and can
be run by voluntary, community and health sector organisations;
training providers; adult and community education; colleges,
schools and universities; and partnerships involving combinations
of these. The qualification has also been mapped against the
national adult literacy core curriculum, and ASDAN was
funded by the DfES to develop learning materials for use with
volunteers with literacy needs.

Flexible Learning. Distance learning package from Volunteer
Reading Help based on the face-to-face training that the charity
has developed for its volunteers over its 30-year history.
It enables individuals to take the initiative and train to
help children who find reading a challenge wherever they live.
The enrolment fee of £150 covers nine modules, module
assessment, a final distance proficiency test and a certificate.

Helping in schools. Accredited 45-hour course for volunteer
helpers in primary schools, run by the Workers' Educational
Association. In addition to attending the course students
are required to undertake a placement of 20 hours at a primary
school. The course is free to schools and students.

Intergenerational school-based projects research. The
Beth Johnson Foundation has conducted research into the experience
of older volunteers in intergenerational school-based projects.
The research focuses on the older person's perspective of
volunteering in projects that bring the old and young together.
It aims to contribute to the debate that acknowledges the
value of volunteering and community involvement, as a means
of creating active communities and addressing social exclusion.

Up project ,which ended in July 2004, produced guidance

Making a Difference: A resource pack for people who want to
become more active citizens. This pack is an outcome of
the Adult and Community Learning Fund and it offers a series
of practical activities designed to stimulate discussion about
active citizenship, to explore some key ideas and to develop
knowledge and skills associated with individual and community
action. The pack is also intended to support a wider interest
in learning, based on extensive experience in the field and
consultation with practitioners from the voluntary, community
