Ethnic minority issues and English as an additional language (EAL)

This section focuses on people of all ages from ethnic minorities for whom English may or may not be a first language. It also includes issues relating to Welsh, Gaelic, refugees and asylum seekers, multiculturalism, travellers, languages and ethnic minority achievement.

 


Glossary:
EAL
- English as an additional language. Provision for children whose first language is not English is generally referred to as EAL.
EFL
- English as a foreign language. EFL usually indicates the use of English in a non-English-speaking region.
ESOL - English for speakers of other languages. In the adult literacy sector, and within the Skills for Life adult basic skills strategy, provision for adults whose first language is not English, within an English-speaking region, is referred to as ESOL. ESL
- English as a second language.
TEFL
