Promoting speaking and listening

Delivered by Julia Strong

In all honesty, I hadn’t really thought about how the students were going to express their ideas before... It’s the way the approach engages disaffected pupils that makes it so successful.” Science teacher from the Brighton pilot.

Turn your secondary school students into powerful communicators across the curriculum, raising standards throughout the school with this innovative cross-curricula approach.

Talk for Writing, originally developed by former headteacher and literacy expert Pie Corbett, has been proven to accelerate significantly pupil progress. Over the past few years the approach has been adapted to suit the needs of secondary school students.

Through a range of worked examples across the curriculum, our training encourages
teachers to think about the “tune” of their specific subject. We will show you how to help students express themselves confidently and effectively both orally and in
written form, as appropriate to each subject area. We can also advise on building this into an effective approach to raising attainment across the curriculum.

Who is the training for?

Either for a small group of enthusiasts from across the curriculum, including a leading member of senior management who can then help to develop the approach throughout the school;

Or for the whole teaching staff and teaching assistants. The literacy coordinator can then use the day to develop the approach throughout the whole school.

Learn how to:

  • Develop a coherent approach to supporting literacy across the curriculum
  • Help students transfer their literacy skills from one subject to another, turning them into powerful, confident communicators
  • Adapt units of work to incorporate the approach

Why it works:

  • Using engaging activities, students become familiar with the patterns of language that each subject requires
  • The students internalise the language patterns before they are required to write them
  • The approach engages both teachers and students because it builds confidence

This training session can be tailored to your needs to help form part of your School Development Plan and a follow-up session can be arranged to help embed the approach.
