Sue Palmer
Sue Palmer, a former primary headteacher, is an independent writer and consultant on literacy and child development. Over a long career in education she has written over 250 books, TV programmes and software packages for children and teachers on aspects of literacy – particularly grammar, spelling and the teaching of writing – and acted as an independent consultant to the Department for Education and other government bodies, the National Literacy Trust, the Basic Skills Agency and the BBC.
She is well-known to UK teachers for articles and columns in the TES and Child Education and her popular in-service courses. Her best-selling book Toxic Childhood: how modern life is damaging our children… and what we can do about it [Orion 2006] helped spark a debate throughout the UK about the nature of modern childhood.
Since then she has become involved in many "childhood campaigns" and is frequently asked to comment on childhood issues in the national and educational press. She is currently a member of the Scottish government’s Early Years Task Force.
In our highly practical Teaching Grammar Creatively conferences, she hopes to bring together her literacy expertise with up-to-date knowledge about the best ways to help 21st century children learn and enjoy learning about language.
