Prue Goodwin
Prue Goodwin is a freelance lecturer in literacy and children’s books. She taught in primary and middle schools for over twenty years and, since leaving the classroom, has worked with teachers, parents, EY specialists, librarians and publishers. Whilst lecturing at the University of Reading, she ran an MA module on Children’s Books in Education.
In addition to giving keynote talks at conferences, Prue runs courses in colleges and schools on language and literacy development, acts as a consultant to publishers of children’s books and researches literacy development in primary schools. She has lectured internationally and is involved in many national initiatives concerning literacy and children’s literature in the UK including Teachers as Readers, a nationwide research project run by UKLA (the United Kingdom Literacy Association). Recent work includes writing Riveting Reads 6-8 and an introduction to Book Ahead for the School Library Association, leading workshops on books for boys for Basic Skills Wales and creating notes for teachers on the magnificent Alfie books by Shirley Hughes (available from Random House Children’s Books).
Prue edited Understanding Children’s Books (SAGE 2008), a collection of articles by leading figures in the world of children’s books. She is also the editor of The Literate Classroom (Routledge 2011), The Articulate Classroom (David Fulton 2001) and Literacy through Creativity (David Fulton 2004). She regularly returns to the classroom to introduce children to a range of literature and to encourage wide, voracious reading. She has a personal, as well as professional, interest in children’s books, and has shared her enthusiasm with colleagues across the UK.
Prue joins us at this year’s Reading Talk, Reading Thought conferences in York and London. With a wealth of experience and specialism in children’s literature, oracy and the literacy curriculum, Prue shares her thoughts, expertise and practical experience in developing creative effective guided reading.
