Impact
We know that low literacy is a key factor in deprivation.
From 2009 to 2011 the National Literacy Trust worked with 21 local authorities through the Partners in Literacy pilot to improve outcomes across communities by:
- Adding value to existing literacy provision – coordinating and improving local support.
- Targeting support to the greatest need and ensuring “hard to reach” families are not excluded by involving partners across the community.
- Developing a local literacy strategy which facilitates partnerships and embeds a long term commitment to literacy.

The outcome of this particular case has been an adult on incapacity benefits who would have never gone to a class gaining literacy qualifications. The outcomes for the individual have expanded way beyond the straightforward literacy outcomes and include self-reported increase in confidence, assertiveness and language and even moving house. This work has closed a gap in our local literacy provision.
