Early Years Foundation Stage review makes its recommendations

30 Mar 2011

In an interview with Nursery World Dame Clare Tickell, who led the review, revealed that the Early Years Foundation Stage will stay mandatory. She also revealed that it recommends a shift to three “prime” areas of learning: communication and language development; personal, social and emotional development; physical development. The review also recommends that the 69 early learning goals be cut down to 17 and that child development checks should be carried out on children between the ages of 24 and 36 months.

The review also recommends that:

  • the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile be “slimmed down” to reflect the change in the number of Early Learning Goals
  • a simple scale should be introduced to measure whether learning and development is emerging, expected or exceeding the early learning goals
  • the Government should provide healthy eating guidelines and nutritional requirements for the under-fives to early years practitioners
  • the Government should continue to aspire to a graduate-led early years workforce

The full interview can be read on the Nursery World website and the full review can be found on the Department for Education website.
