More children living in working homes are living in poverty
1 Feb 2011
A recent report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation has found that the number of working families living in poverty has risen to 2.1 million, and states that work alone is not the answer to ending poverty.
Covering an 18 month period from 2008/09, the number of poor children working in workless households accounted for 58% of young people living in poverty, whereas the number of children living in poverty in workless households fell to 1.6 million.
The report also examines the role of tax credits and benefits in reducing poverty. Report co-author Tom MacInnes said
With more than half of all children in poverty belonging to working families, it is simply not possible to have anti-poverty policies on the idea that work alone is a route out of poverty. Child poverty in working households must be given the same focus.
