Dad's in charge
8 Dec 2010
The way modern families operate has changed, with fathers playing a key role in the care of their children in many households, according to research by Working Families and Lancaster University Management School (LUMS).
The interim report of the two year project, Work-life balance: working for fathers?, finds that one in five fathers of a child under five years old is a sole carer for part of the working week, with 43% of fathers providing childcare before or after school.
Lead researcher at LUMS, Dr Caroline Gatrell, says:
The way we “do” families has changed – no only because mothers are more likely to go out to work, but also because today, both mothers and fathers want close relationships with children as they are growing up.
