The superpowers of comic books and literacy

Under a reading and writing initiative called First Steps in Bridgend, Australia, staff have reported a dramatic improvement in student's writing skills since the programme started.
Under the programme, students cover a range of genres including poetry fairy tales, autobiographies, letters, manuals and recipes to determine the different writing styles and apply it to their own work.
The same programme is being taken up by Porthcawl Primary School in Wales where the staff have restructured the curriculum to give First Steps its place.
In the school's latest Estyn report published last month, inspectors said that standards had not only improved considerably but the gap between boys and girls in English was narrowing.
