New appointment for former National Literacy Trust trustee

21 May 2010

New peer and past National Literacy Trust trustee Jonathan Hill has been appointed as parliamentary under-secretary of state for schools by the Department for Education.

Former political secretary to John Major, Jonathan was made a lord yesterday (19 May 2010) and immediately given a junior minister role within the Department for Education.

He has many years of experience providing advice and support for previous governments. In 1991 Jonathan joined the Conservative government's Policy Unit, specialising in housing, transport and inner-city policy. He also worked as a special adviser to three government departments during the 1980s - employment, health, and trade and industry.

Jonathan first became a member of the National Literacy Trust council in 1996, before becoming a trustee in 2004.

National Literacy Trust Director, Jonathan Douglas, says:

“Jonathan has provided tremendous support for the National Literacy Trust over the years and we are thrilled to hear of his appointment. We would like to congratulate Jonathan and wish him all the best in his new role”.
