Your World Cup kit bag!

29 May 2018

World Cup 2018

The 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia kicks off in just two weeks! Using the excitement and fanfare around the tournament to boost literacy, we’ve created a kit bag full of football-themed activities, competitions, teaching resources and fun lesson ideas to get more children and young people reading and writing this summer.

  • World Cup Football School: we’ve teamed up with Walker Books to create free primary school teaching resources, lesson ideas, writing tips, posters and bookmarks based on the popular Football School book series – with a World Cup twist
  • Daily World Cup story: follow friends Seth and Nadiya, ‘The Defenders’, as they attempt to solve (ghostly!) problems as they unfold on and off the pitch at the World Cup finals in Russia. Children’s author Tom Palmer will publish a new chapter of the story every day on our website, which can be read aloud in class or at home. The first chapter is out now
  • Family activities: we’ve created a bundle of World Cup activities, top tips, colouring sheets and book lists to help parents support their child’s literacy at home. Lots of football books are also up for grabs in our World Cup giveaway!
  • World Cup writing competition: combining football and learning, we’ve teamed up with Kickaround magazine to bring youngsters an exciting World Cup writing competition! Write about your favourite moment from any World Cup and be in with a chance to win some exciting prizes. Get your copy from 1 June from your local WHSmith, Tesco or online
For the past 20 years, we’ve used the power of football and major sporting events to inspire children’s reading and writing – with remarkable results. Find out more about our sport and literacy programmes.
