The Lord of The Rings in Libraries was initiated as a partnership between the National Reading Campaign, CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals), Collins Children's Books and Games Workshop plc. Launched in January 2001, it gave public and school libraries the opportunity to host The Lord of The Rings themed workshops, which attracted large numbers of boys and young men who otherwise would not consider entering a library.
Games Workshop is now developing the scheme into a network of gaming clubs in libraries across the country, with a dedicated team providing support and assistance for librarians involved in setting up and sustaining the clubs. The aim is to make the gaming clubs an ongoing activity in libraries, and to encourage the new audiences generated through the original The Lord of The Rings events to become regular library visitors.
