While keeping in mind the issues surrounding boys' attainment and attitudes towards reading, it is obviously still important to consider girls, particularly when implementing a project specifically aimed at boys. Honesty seems to be the best policy when confronting potential resistance to an all-male project. If the issues and motivation are explained clearly, schools can hopefully achieve the understanding of girls and mothers.
In response to feedback from schools, we have developed Reading Angels for those schools wishing to implement a project for the girls alongside Reading Champions. The external recognition (certificates, badges and online nomination) from the National Reading Campaign is still only reserved for boys. However, you can now download and print specially designed Reading Angels certificates for the girls.
