For a school librarian this report makes fascinating reading. It is fantastic that your research acknowledges that the number 1 element of what makes a good library is a 'good school librarian.' This report is a wake-up call for the professional and literacy organisations to conduct systematic research into provision of both primary and secondary school libraries and how they are staffed, whether by professional librarians or others.
I was disappointed to see under the paragraph on p. 8 about the 'mixed bag' staffing of primary school libraries that no mention was made of the innovative scheme run by Tower Hamlets Schools Library Services whereby primary schools can hire a professional librarian to set up and manage their primary school libraries. This valued scheme has been operating for more than 12 years now and has a significant impact on the reading and literacy outcomes of pupils.
