Campaigning for literacy

15 Feb 2010

  • Our Manifesto for Literacy, developed in consultation with over 30 national organisations and launched in September 2009, called on all political parties to prioritise literacy in the run-up to the 2010 election.
  • In 2008 we led the National Year of Reading, which reached 13 million people from our target audience and saw 2.3 million people join their local library.
  • Our advocacy for family literacy, reading for pleasure and boys’ reading has placed these issues firmly at the top of national and regional agendas.
  • We have worked with brands including Marmite and Muller to take reading to new audiences – our partnership with Haven Holidays took free books and reading promotions to 37,000 children and 55,000 adults, while our partnership with Iceland supermarkets put 100,000 books into the hands of less affluent families across the UK.
