Raising government awareness of literacy issues
8 Jun 2010
Campaigning to raise awareness of literacy issues in the UK is a core part of our work. We pressurise government to adopt literacy policies that will effect real change. Our Manifesto for Literacy, developed in consultation with over 30 national organisations and launched in September 2009, called on all political parties to prioritise literacy in the run-up to the 2010 election.
We used the manifesto as part of our Vote for Literacy campaign, which calls on MPs and candidates to prioritise literacy, resulting in 38 MPs and election candidates pledging their support. Many of these now hold seats in parliament and, with the help of our supporters, we will continue to lobby them to ensure that literacy policy is firmly on their agendas and is not overlooked in the face of potential spending cuts.
