“I am deeply impressed by the National Literacy Trust’s way of analysing problems and then coming up with imaginative solutions. For example, its policy of identifying what might be called ‘alpha females’ in tower blocks and deprived estates, and then getting them to give out books and spread the work, far more likely to succeed than the heavy-handed approach of well-meaning outsiders knocking on doors. The National Literacy Trust is also extremely effective, with a minimum of staff."
